Skiing Holidays in Davos, Switzerland
Once famous for its sanatoriums, Davos became a winter sports resort in the late 19th century. A local purchased skis from Norway; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose wife was in a tuberculosis clinic, loved the sport of skiing so much he wrote about it in the London magazine The Strand and the rest, as they say, is history.
Davos has no fewer than six fantastic ski areas - Parsenn, Jakobshorn, Pischa, Madrisa, Rinerhorn and Schatzalp-Strela - that's over 300kms of exhilarating fun on the snow, with Parsenn being the largest and Rinerhorn arguably the quietest.
Start on the nursery slopes at Bolgen and Bünda, move on to the gentle blues at Pischa and then, when you're more proficient you could try the 12km challenge from Weissfluhgipfel to Küblis or the Meierhofer Tälli, which has apparently been renamed the Hillary Clinton run by locals as it's her favourite. For thrill-seekers, there's nowhere better than the black runs on the Rinerhorn and Jakobshorn.
For boarders, there's plenty of park life with a super-pipe and wicked jumps on Jakobshorn. The Jatzpark has a variety of kickers and rails and there's boardercross at Madrisa and the Parsenn. For cross-country aficionados there are over 75kms of trails to be enjoyed.
Davos has two parts - Davos Platz and Davos Dorf. Platz is where most of the hotels and shops are located and Dorf is closer to the slopes. It's known as a party town, from dawn to dusk, with a huge variety of establishments to visit from high-end dining to reasonably priced snacks. It's also close to Klosters, an idyllic alpine village.
The pick of the bunch in Davos? Perhaps the wonderful art nouveau Montana Bar, the Central Piano Bar and the renowned Pöstli Bar? There are cinemas, theatres and a casino and a whole host of off-the-skis activities - tobogganing is world-famous here - then there's bowling, curling, hang-gliding, indoor horse-riding, ice-skating, a climbing wall, swimming, tennis, Nordic walking and plenty of spas to relax away the day's cramps and stiff muscles.
You'll have a fabulous winter holiday if you choose Davos. Allow GetSkiing to arrange it for you and we'll find you a great deal that won't break the bank.
