Skiers do tend to veer towards purpose built ski resorts as the high altitude skiing attracts them the most. Guaranteed snowfall is really important to most skiers as well as slope side accommodation, but these resorts do tend to lack in the charm category.

Below we have listed some of our favourite resort for picturesque skiing. We believe you won't be disappointed.

Wengen, Switzerland

Wengen is a small picturesque village located on a plateau, 1274 m above sea level. The friendly atmosphere is inviting and the locals are happy to stop and have a chat. Wengen does not have any road access which is what makes it so peaceful along with the beautiful mountain views.

Wengen has an excellent selection of winter sports including sledging, snowshoeing, ice skating, skiing and snowboarding. During winter the International World Cup Lauberhorn Race is held here, a fantastic race to watch. A beautiful resort for stunning skiing.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is situated beneath the absolutely stunning Matterhorn and has the most amazing views and beautiful scenery. The resort is traffic free, leaving guests to wander round at their own free will.

The resort centre is filled with charming chalets and hotels. Staying at one of these many accommodations, all you will be disturbed by is the noise of the horse drawn sleighs, which we’re sure you will be taking a tip on. All abilities can ski here with many of the lower runs descending down tree lined pistes.

Verbier, Switzerland

Verbier is a stunning resort situated in the 4 Vallees ski region. The resort itself has views that will take your breath away. If you are at Mont Fort, which is at 3300 m you can see all the way across to the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.

From Verbier you can get a bus over to Bruson which has some beautiful tree lined runs as well as uninterrupted boulevards. The friendly atmosphere makes it all the more stunning and a reason to stay here.

Chamonix, France

Chamonix combines dramatic scenery with fantastic skiing as well as bring a traditional Alpine town. This is just a few of the reasons skiers return here year after year. Sat at 1035 m, Chamonix is in a steep sided valley below the amazing peak of Mont Blanc.

There are plenty of tree lined runs to keep you going, as well as great pistes. If there are thrill seekers they will love the some of the challenging off piste areas. The 20 km glacier runs along the stunning Vallee Blanche, you don't even have to be a fantastic skier to enjoy it.

Ellmau, Austria

Ellmau is a stunning resort nestled in the Austrian Tyrol between the Wilder Kaiser mountains and the Kitzbuheler Alps. You can take a trip up the Hartkaiserbahn, a beautiful mountain railway and enjoy the stunning views.

Once you are at the top and have admired the views you can descend at your own pace down the winding blue and red runs. From here you have access to the famous ski paradise of Kitzbuhel via Brixen im Thale.
