Soldeu & El Tarter

Soldeu is a great value resort in Andorra, with the local ski slopes said to be amongst the best in the region.

The Grandvalira is the largest ski area in Europe outside the Alps, with links to Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig resulting in a huge 186kms of pistes at your disposal - and all included on your whole area lift pass.

The fact that FIS Women's World Cup takes place here every year should provide a flavour of the quality of some of the runs.

Local legend has it that Soldeu is the birthplace of skiing in Andorra, apparently created by a postman who strapped wooden planks on his feet instead of snowshoes to get down the mountain.

The resort comprises four areas all connected by bus, if not via lifts, skis and snowboards. El Tarter, Incles, Bordes d'Envalira and Soldeu itself are spread out over 4kms and there's plenty for novices and intermediates with runs on open mountainsides as well as winding through the woods.

Experts will love the off-piste possibilities and moguls, whilst the long runs down from Llosada are great for more experienced skiers and boarders. The bowl of Riba Escorxada is fine for all abilities including the most timid.

For snowboarders, there's a fun snowpark with dramatic half-pipe which you can reach easily thanks to a new six-seater chair lift.

Off Piste Skiing in Soldeu & El Tarter

There is plenty of off-piste skiing available in the are around Soldeu, with the opportunity to join specialist coaches who will help you seek out the best areas in which to take on a new challenge.

Family Skiing in Soldeu & El Tarter

Given that Soldeu is a relatively laid back resort, it should come as little surprise that it's a popular option for families, with the high quality beginner slopes and the excellent ski schools also being well suited to youngsters.

Apres-Ski in Soldeu & El Tarter

Eat tapas! That's our number one recommendation in this Catalan resort filled with bars like The Aspen, Piccadilly and The Villager.

There's also the wonderfully-named Fat Albert's in a 500-year old barn conversion, open until 5am for you revellers and good time people. Restaurants cater for every food taste so you won't go hungry either.

El Tarter has plenty of offer but is quieter so choose to stay there if you like more peaceful evenings.

Non-Skiing Activities in Soldeu & El Tarter

For non-skiing activities, you could try snowshoe walks, dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice skating and paragliding.

You could also head to Andorra La Vella to sample the delights of the Caldea Spa or make the most of the fantastic duty-free shopping opportunities that are available.

Gary's Little Gems in Soldeu & El Tarter

I reckon Soldeu has the best skiing in Andorra and also a superb boarding park. Like the rest of Andorran skiing, there is a vibrant night life and good value. For those good skiers who are put off by the high prices in France, Soldeu is a good value for money alternative with good skiing for all levels of ability.
