Obertauern

Set at the top of the Tauern pass, surrounded by the spectacular peaks of the Radstädter Tauern, a skiing holiday in Obertauern is sure to have good snow because of the altitude. The resort sits within a fantastic and easily accessible piste circuit which can be circumnavigated in about two hours. All great for a mixed ability group.

There are nursery slopes near the centre of the village and there's a high-altitude beginners’ slope if you take the Schaidberg chair.

The Green Circuit is fab for beginners and returners wanting to find their ski legs again. The Pink Circuit has the more demanding blues and reds for intermediates and novices wanting to move up a notch. From the top Gamsleiten chair, advanced skiers will find some steep blacks to thrill. A small terrain park called The Spot is to be found above the Almrauch Hut and there are some interesting off-piste possibilities too.

Apres-Ski in Obertauern

The village itself is a mixture of traditional chalets and stylish modern buildings. The area has lots of ski huts and mountain restaurants for your delight - try the Flubachalm just above the village for a tasty lunch. As the lifts close, the ski huts come to life, some of which encourage dancing on the tables! (Lürzer Alm you have been named!) For loud, visit Qu Bar, for quieter, Mundwerk. Or dance some more at Monkey's Heaven.

For swimming, some hotel pools are open to the public, or take a sleigh ride or a walking trail to Kringsalm. Salzburg for the day would be a fascinating excursion.

Gary's Little Gems in Obertauern

Obertauern is not that well known on the UK ski map but will be soon due to guaranteed high altitude skiing and ease of access to the slopes from a good range of quality hotels. You can also have a ski away day to Bad Kleinkircheim and hopefully meet up with Franz Klammer, who learned to ski here.
