Ski Whistler

Whistler is just…wow! That's all we need to say really. But we'd better elaborate, just to convince you. There are two mountains - Whistler and Blackcomb - linked by the amazing Peak2Peak gondola, which is worth a ride for the spectacular views alone, even if you aren't a skier or snowboarder. The combined resorts are made up of a massive 8100 acres of snow heaven, with 3 glaciers, 16 alpine bowls, some fab terrain parks and about 200 pistes to choose from.

Beginners - are not restricted to the lower slopes, which gives a great sense of achievement early on - hoorah! Try the Burnt Stew trail from Harmony Express for starters. There's also a Children's Learning Area at Olympic Station and the Green Acres Family zone off the Emerald Express.

Intermediates - there's so much you could come here for several years and still not do everything. The Symphony bowl is wonderful, Harmony Ridge is an all-time magical experience - or how about The Saddle for a bit more of a challenge? Then Blackcomb glacier is a great off-piste adventure.

Experts - Oh, Spanky's Ladder on Blackcomb is a must-do-sometime, Couloir Extreme has been rated in the world's top ten steepest runs, then there's the Dave Murray Downhill, used for World Cup racing and Franz's Run was the Women's Downhill for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Snowboarders - there are as many boarders as skiers around here, and mega-riding for every level and style, with parks and pipes and amazing backcountry.

Whistler - the perfect all-rounder.

Après-ski Whistler

Whistler Village is a great place to hang out, pedestrianised, immediately below the slopes and filled with major brand shops as well as some quirky independents, open late in the evenings. It's a cosmopolitan resort, reflected in the range of eateries available for every taste under the sun.

It's hard to pick out one restaurant over another but here's an insider guide - great breakfasts at Elements and Stonesedge. For lunch, you'll probably be on the slopes - the Chickpea is good, the waffles at Crystal Hut are to die for and Raven's Nest does the most fabulous vegetarian and vegan food (kind of unusual to be able to eat healthily on the hill). In the evening, the choice is yours from 21 Steps to the Mongolie Grill, or, if you're into fine dining, there's the Rimrock and Araxi, or, a little out of town, Nita Lake Lodge has a fabulous restaurant.

If you want to party then Whistler is geared up for that - but has quiet corners too, so families and tired people can get an early night too.

Other activities - the list is endless: Winter ziplining, dog sledding, tube park, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, ice skating, ice climbing, winter bungee jumping, tree top adventures, hockey tours, eagle viewing, ice fishing, bobsleigh, skeleton and Olympic tours…
And to round it all off, the Scandinave Spa is a zen-like experience which will leave you more relaxed than you've been for years.

Yes, we like Whistler. A lot. Can you tell? Try it for yourselves and we absolutely promise you'll want to go back again and again.

Gary's Little Gems

"Simply the best ski area in North America with great skiing for all levels of ability, great night life and some high quality ski-in ski-out accommodation. Try the Men's Olympic downhill run from top to bottom and see if you can ski it without stopping. The World Cup skiers do it under 2 minutes - if you can get to 10 minutes, you are doing well. The new Peak2Peak gondola has to be tried and is sure to take your breath away."
