Skiing holidays in Rauris, Austria
Rauris is one of those resorts you may not have heard of but after you read this you'll wonder why. It's located in the spectacular high mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park between the Gastein valley and Zell am See, and used to be the home of goldminers. It's unspoilt and breathtaking in its beauty. Ulrike Maier, the two-time Super-G world champion, was born here. You too could ski in her hallowed tracks.
Skiing here is not too scary for beginners and yet challenging enough for snow freaks who need adrenalin rushes.
For beginners, the Hochalm area is just right, with easy access from the gondola. Progress to the Kreuzboden and Waldalm areas to experience well-maintained curvy-carvy red runs, where it's easy to improve your technique. For top dogs, the black run from the Heimalm has to be experienced to be believed, and when the powder's good, there's nothing to beat the ungroomed pistes of Waldalm and Kreuzboden, 3.3 kms in all!
Rauris is a small, picturesque and traditional village with pretty cobbled streets, unspoilt by the influx of mass tourism, which hasn't happened quite yet - and long may that last.
Here, you can be lively or you can be quiet. The choice is yours. Start at the Heimalm mountain hut. Live it up a little or a lot at The Shakesbeer (open until whenever people flake out) or the Grimming Cellar Bar. Eat out at the Landgasthaus Weixen, the Stadl Café or the Gasthof Brau…
Otherwise, ice climb on waterfalls, go curling or bowling, enjoy parapenting and snowshoe walking, take romantic sleigh rides or torchlit walks. You could grab a trip to a 600-year-old schnapps factory or the Weixen Beer Brewery, where there are sure to be free samples. Ice skating is available too, but probably best before the brewery trip.
Rauris is a dream of a place to ski in natural beauty and stay in an unspoilt village. Let GetSkiing take you there.
